Motherwell Town Centre, the first Dementia Friendly Town Centre in Scotland
This Dementia Friendly Community initiative launched on 21 September 2012 in Dalziel St Andrews Church, Motherwell. 15 local businesses and organisations made this commitment by signing their action plans, endorsed by Caroline Brown, Alzheimer Scotland Council Member. Arlene Crockett, Lanarkshire Locality Manager opened the event on World Alzheimer Day, along with speeches from Nina Mahal, Interim Chairperson NHS Lanarkshire and Councillor Kaye Harmon from North Lanarkshire Council.
Agnes Houston, Chair of the Scottish Dementia Working Group gave a detailed description of her own personal experience of dementia friendly businesses in her locality as well as showing a short film on her daily routine whilst using her local gym. The Alzheimer Scotland Memory Bus was also parked for the afternoon in Motherwell Town Centre with great success.
The working group for this exciting new initiative is now tasked with preparing awareness sessions for businesses as well as handing out over 1000 hints and tips guides to staff at businesses such as Asda, Motherwell and others who committed to this as part of their action plans. This is a work in progress so watch this space!
Lanarkshire Memory Walk
This is it! A successful Memory Walk on 30/9/12 with 50 people supporting us. Support from people with dementia, their carers and families, Community Mental Health Teams in Airdrie and Coatbridge as well as Lanarkshire Staff. Thanks to all for their support on the day and with fundraising for the event. Thanks also to the Airdrie & Coatbridge Advertiser for their advert.
We hoped to raise about £750.00 for the Lanarkshire Dementia Resource Centre but look to smash this target and are nearer a target of £1500. Great start to our Campaign!
