Day Care and Day Opportunities
Alzheimer Scotland provides 3 day care and day opportunities services in the Skye and Lochalsh region.
Services offer social contact in a warm and welcoming environment with a wide range of activities, tailored to the particular interests and preferences of those attending.
- Portree Day Opportunities Club
The club meets within Tigh na Drochaid Resource Centre, Bridge Road, Portree, on a Wednesday between 10.30 am and 3.30 pm. - Portree Day Care
Meets within Tigh na Drochaid Resource Centre, Bridge Road, Portree, on a Monday, Tuesday and Friday between 10.30 am and 3.30 pm. - Dornie Day Care group
Meets within Aird Ferry Resource Centre, Dornie, on a Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 10.30 am and 3.30 pm.
Activities
Activities are as diverse as the interests of those attending and have included arts and crafts, gardening, computing, visits to places of interest in the area, games, quizzes, music and local history.
Care Program
With the involvement of the person with dementia, and carer where appropriate, we put together a Care Programme for each person, tailored to his or her individual abilities, interests and preferences.
Staff will keep carers informed about how a person is getting on at Day Care.
Transport
Transport to and from the Day Care and Day Opportunities is provided by staff, using private cars or taxis, with an escort if appropriate.
Lunch
Lunch is provided each day, with a choice of meals offered from the menu of the day.
Costs
A small charge of £3.60 per day is made, which is a contribution towards the cost of meals, snacks and transport. A charge of £5 per week is levied by the Highland Council.
Care at Home Support Service
Alzheimer Scotland Skye & Lochalsh Services provides support to people with dementia living in the community.
Staff
Our care at home/housing support service is delivered by our team of highly trained and experienced Staff.
In addition to an ongoing programme of dementia specific training and continued professional development, prior to delivering our care at home/housing support service, staff gain experience of working in Alzheimer Scotland Day Care (or Day Opportunities if appropriate).
Support plan
With the full involvement of the Service User and Carer where appropriate we put together a personal support plan reflecting the individual needs, preferences and abilities of the person. Focusing on maximising strengths, maintaining social links and social skills and continued enjoyment of activities and pursuits.
This could include encouragement/assistance with personal care, prompting & encouragement to self medicate safely, support to do everyday tasks such as cooking or shopping and help with leisure activities.
Benefits
Our care at home/housing support service is delivered in the individual’s own home or in the community. Examples of how the service has benefited people with dementia in Skye & Lochalsh include:
- Encouragement and assistance with personal care
- Assistance and support to go shopping and attend hairdressing appointments
- To accompany service users to GP appointments
- Encouragement and prompting to safely self medicate
- Support to continue to attend clubs/social events/places of worship
